Alfredus has been decorating public spaces in Saint-Barths with murals, picturesque coverings on buildings and celebrations of the island’s ambiance since 2018.
Depuis 2018, Alfredus enlumine l’espace publique de Saint-Barthélemy grâce à ses peintures murales, pansements pittoresques des constructions humaines et célébrations d’une poétique insulaire.
Gustavia, 2015 : For the first time, Alfred Castet added some style to the island’s art scene with his aerosol sprays. Alfredus raised his graffiti and colors at an exhibition that initiated his career, carried by the same favorable winds then blowing on the sixth edition of Les Voiles de St Barth.
February 2018: The Christopher hotel restaurant caught fire. During reconstruction, the 5-star restaurant was lined with partitions, huge white sheets where, soon, rivers cascaded, vines mingled and reefs shimmered under the dolphin’s eye. It was the artist’s first project, his first mural in Saint-Barths, the first work of a colorist cherishing his island.

Everything sped up for the street artist: in Guadeloupe first, where his work met with great success; in Saint-Barths, following the Christopher project, he decorated walls at the Eden Rock hotel and villas. He was also approached by a large hotel group in Florida. The next step is creating an augmented-reality mural, again in Saint-Barths : a concept well in tune with the period, the discovery through your smartphone screens of an animation breathing life into the immense piece of work.
A luxury clientele, contemporary projects and international commissions gave momentum to a graffiti artist profoundly attached to Saint-Barths. Alfredus wanted to keep making graffiti on the island, thus creating the permanent murals of the Colombier school, the Oasis, the Zion restaurant as well as the magnificent one at Les Mangliers : a month’s work producing a 120m2 graffiti evoking Saint-Barths’ traditional atmosphere.
“Preserving the environment means a lot to me ; I like highlighting it in my work. The augmented-reality mural will be conceived in this spirit. How, I don’t know yet, but the idea is to create something fresh, vegetal and alive, symbolic and focusing on natural heritage preservation in Saint-Barths.”
An art with political significance in its ability to cover the concerns of growing urbanization in tropical and saturated colors.
Alfredus, who was «practically born in Guadeloupe», has enjoyed Saint-Barths’ natural environment since his early childhood: a qualified surfer, a champion on the waves, the artist has never stopped creating and drawing inspiration from the beautiful, exotic environment of the Lesser Antilles. Today, Alfredus agrees: it’s all about balance, between artistic creation, nature, the ocean – which are and will always be intimately linked.C’était en 2015, à Gustavia : Alfred Castet vaporisait pour la première fois de ses bombes aérosols la scène artistique de l’île. Lors d’une exposition tremplin, Alfredus hisse ses graffs et ses couleurs, porté sans doute par le même vent qui souffle alors sur la sixième édition des Voiles de St Barth.
Février 2018 : les flammes consument le restaurant de l’hôtel Christopher. Le temps de renaître de ses cendres, le 5 étoiles se barde de cloisons, immenses feuilles blanches où, bientôt, les rivières cascadent, les lianes s’étranglent ou bien le récif chatoie sous l’oeil du dauphin. “Premier chantier” pour l’artiste, première peinture murale d’Alfredus pour Saint-Barth, premier pansement d’un coloriste choyant son île de coeur.

Car voilà que tout s’accélère pour le street artist : en Guadeloupe d’abord, où ses travaux rencontrent un succès manifeste ; à Saint-Barth du même coup, à la suite du projet Christopher, qu’on lui alloue des murs à l’Eden Rock, sinon en villas, ou bien qu’il soit sollicité par un grand groupe hôtelier de Floride. Prochaine étape : la réalisation d’une fresque en réalité augmentée, toujours à Saint-Barthélemy. Un concept dans l’ère du temps où il s’agira de découvrir, à travers l’écran de notre smartphone, une animation qui insufflera la vie à l’oeuvre immense.
Clientèle luxueuse, projets contemporains et commandes à l’international donc, donnent des ailes à un graffeur au demeurant profondément enraciné dans l’île et qui met un point d’honneur à continuer de graffer pour elle. Ainsi aura-t-on vu naître les fresques permanentes de l’école Sainte-Marie de Colombier ou encore de l’Oasis, du restaurant Zion et enfin celle superbe des Mangliers : un mois de travail pour 120m2 d’univers saint-barth traditionnel.“Je suis très attaché à la préservation de l’environnement ; c’est quelque chose que j’aime mettre en avant dans mon travail. C’est dans cet esprit que sera imaginée la fresque en réalité augmentée. De quelle manière, je ne sais pas encore, mais l’idée sera de dresser quelque chose de frais, de végétal et vivant, mettant en avant une symbolique, celle de la préservation du patrimoine naturel de Saint- Barthélemy.”
Un art enfin à portée politique, dans sa faculté à draper de couleurs tropicales et saturées, les affres d’une urbanisation croissante.
“Pratiquement né en Guadeloupe”, Alfredus compose depuis sa plus tendre enfance avec le milieu naturel de Saint-Barthélemy : surfeur qualifié, champion sur les vagues, l’artiste n’aura finalement jamais cessé de composer et de s’inspirer du tableau délicieux de l’exotisme des Petites Antilles. Aujourd’hui, Alfredus en convient : tout n’est que question d’équilibre, entre la création artistique, la nature, l’océan — qui sont et seront toujours intimement liés.
